Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father divorced at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark NJ and was educated in the Baptist Church. In her early twenties when her mother gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah, a 5'10" tall forward on her high school team was always a tall girl. She sang the song"Home" from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah first began to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah is one of the first members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. He signed Latifah and then released her debut track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
